Acute appendicitis
Know symptoms
- Pain starting near the navel, migrating to the right lower abdomen.
- Loss of appetite with nausea and occasional vomiting.
- Low-grade fever with pain worsening on movement.
Know causes
- Obstruction of the appendix by faecolith or lymphoid tissue.
- Bacterial infection following blockage and inflammation.
- Condition is more common in adolescents and young adults.
Care
- Urgent surgical evaluation for suspected acute appendicitis.
- Appendectomy is the definitive treatment in most cases.
- Early antibiotics and monitoring in selected uncomplicated cases.
