
Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease)
Known Symptoms
- Light or reddish skin patches with loss of sensation
- Numbness or tingling in hands, feet, or face
- Muscle weakness in affected areas
- Thickened nerves in some cases
Known Causes
- Infection with Mycobacterium leprae bacteria
- Close and prolonged contact with untreated individuals
- Rarely, genetic susceptibility may play a role
Care
- Clinical examination of skin and peripheral nerves
- Skin smear or biopsy for definitive diagnosis
- Early treatment with multi-drug therapy (MDT)
- Avoid prolonged contact with untreated cases to prevent spread
- Regular follow-up to monitor nerve function and prevent disability
