
Lipoma / Sebaceous Cyst / Ganglion
Known Symptoms
- Soft, mobile, painless lump (lipoma) under the skin.
- Dome-shaped cyst with central punctum (epidermoid cyst).
- Firm, transilluminant swelling near joints (ganglion cyst).
- Discomfort or pressure on nearby structures if enlarged.
Known Causes
- Lipomas: usually of unknown origin and sporadic.
- Cysts: blocked pilosebaceous units or minor trauma.
- Ganglia: joint or tendon sheath degeneration or stress.
- Occasionally related to family history or repeated local injury.
Care
- Observation for small, asymptomatic lesions is sufficient.
- Elective surgical excision for symptoms or cosmetic reasons.
- Avoid attempting home incision to prevent infection.
- Ultrasound or histology is recommended for atypical or recurrent lumps.
