Acute Kidney Injury – Management and Support

Known Symptoms

• Sudden decrease in urine output or dark-colored urine
• Swelling in legs, ankles, or around the eyes due to fluid retention
• Fatigue, confusion, or difficulty concentrating
• Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite

Note: If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek emergency care immediately. Come to the Emergency Department as soon as possible—drive yourself if you are able, have someone bring you, or call our ambulance service for immediate assistance.

Known Causes

• Severe dehydration or significant fluid loss
• Low blood pressure or shock affecting kidney perfusion
• Severe infections or sepsis
• Certain medications or toxins that affect kidney function

Care

• Rapid assessment, including blood tests, urine tests, and kidney function monitoring
• Intravenous fluids and medications to support blood pressure and kidney function
• Temporary dialysis if necessary to remove waste and excess fluid
• Close hospital monitoring and management of underlying causes to prevent complications
