Care Before the Procedure
- Fasting for several hours if sedation or anesthesia is planned.
- Inform your doctor about blood thinners, allergies, or existing health conditions.
- Arrange for someone to accompany you due to the effects of sedation.
- Avoid smoking or certain medications as instructed.
Care During the Procedure
- Local anesthesia or sedation is applied to numb the throat.
- The bronchoscope is gently inserted through the mouth or nose into the lungs.
- Airways are examined, and samples may be collected if needed.
- The procedure usually lasts 20–60 minutes, depending on purpose.
- Vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure.
Care After the Procedure
- Rest until the effects of sedation wear off; avoid driving or operating machinery.
- Mild sore throat, cough, or hoarseness may occur temporarily.
- Report shortness of breath, fever, chest pain, or bleeding immediately.
- Resume medications and diet as advised by your doctor.
- Follow-up may include lab results or imaging to guide treatment.
