Care Before the Procedure
- Inform your doctor about allergies, medications, or bleeding disorders.
- Undergo imaging (X-ray or ultrasound) to assess the lung and fluid.
- Fasting may be required if sedation or anesthesia is planned.
- Consent must be obtained for the procedure.
Care During the Procedure
- Performed via an existing chest tube or through placement of a new chest tube.
- Local anesthesia and sometimes sedation are given.
- Sclerosant (talc or chemical agent) is introduced into the pleural space.
- Patient positioning ensures maximum lung-chest wall contact for adhesion.
- Procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes.
Care After the Procedure
- Monitor vital signs, oxygen levels, and chest tube output if present.
- Mild chest pain, fever, or shortness of breath may occur.
- Rest and avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
- Report persistent pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of infection immediately.
- Follow-up imaging confirms lung adhesion and absence of fluid buildup.
