Taking of Cervical Smear & Vaginal Pessaries
Care Before the Procedure
- Avoid sexual intercourse 24-48 hours prior to cervical smear.
- Refrain from using vaginal medications, douches, or creams before procedure.
- Inform doctor about pregnancy or recent gynecological procedures.
- Discuss symptoms like prolapse or incontinence for pessary selection.
Care During the Procedure
- Remain relaxed during speculum examination for cervical smear collection.
- Check if the pessary is inserted carefully and fitted to patient’s individual anatomy.
- Follow clinician’s instructions for positioning and comfort during procedure.
- Communicate any discomfort, pain, or unusual sensations immediately.
Care After the Procedure
- Mild spotting may occur after cervical smear; usually resolves quickly.
- Maintain pessary hygiene with regular cleaning as instructed by provider.
- Periodic pessary removal or replacement is required for safety and comfort.
- Follow up with clinician for smear results and pessary assessment.
Eligibility
- Women aged 21 years and older for routine cervical cancer screening using a Pap smear.
- Individuals with abnormal bleeding, HPV risk, or prior cervical abnormalities needing cytology.
- Women with pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence requiring vaginal pessary support.
- Patients needing local drug delivery via pessary for therapeutic management of gynecological conditions.
