Ultrasound (Sonography)
Care Before the Procedure
Preparation depends on the area being examined.
- Fasting: Required for abdominal ultrasounds (typically 8-12 hours) to ensure the gallbladder is distended and to reduce gas in the intestines that can block the view.
- Full Bladder: Required for pelvic or obstetric ultrasounds in early pregnancy. Patients are asked to drink water and not urinate before the exam, as a full bladder acts as an acoustic window to view the pelvic organs.
- No Preparation: Needed for musculoskeletal, vascular, or small parts (e.g., thyroid) ultrasounds.
- Clothing: Patients should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. They may be asked to change into a gown.
Care During the Procedure
The process is painless and typically takes 30-60 minutes.
- The Process: The patient lies on an examination table. The sonographer applies a clear, water-based gel to the skin over the area being examined. This gel eliminates air pockets between the skin and the transducer, allowing the sound waves to travel efficiently.
- Patient Role: The patient must remain still and may be asked to hold their breath briefly to get clearer images. The sonographer may apply gentle pressure with the transducer to get better angles.
- Sensations: The gel may feel cool and wet. The pressure from the transducer is usually minimal. There is no pain from the sound waves.
Care After the Procedure
There is no recovery time or specific aftercare.
- Immediate Aftercare: The gel is wiped off, and the patient can resume all normal activities immediately.
- Results: The sonographer may share preliminary observations, but a formal interpretation is made by a radiologist. A report is sent to the referring doctor, who will discuss the full results with the patient, usually within a few days.
- Long-Term Management: Ultrasound is an excellent tool for monitoring changes over time. It can be used repeatedly to track the progression of a disease, the healing of an injury, or the growth of a fetus, with no cumulative radiation risk. Its findings often guide decisions on further testing, treatment plans, or the need for surgical intervention.
