About the Speciality
Our Gastrosciences service diagnoses and treats conditions of the digestive system such as the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, pancreas and bile ducts. Our team of gastroenterologists, hepatologists and specialist nurses use advanced, minimally invasive techniques to give precise care. POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy) treats oesophageal motility disorders, ESD to remove early tumours without open surgery, ERCP and SpyGlass for bile-duct problems, EndoVAC for closing leaks, STER for subepithelial tumours, and capsule endoscopy to image the small intestine. We also perform diagnostics and therapeutic endoscopy (OGD, colonoscopy, EUS, manometry, pH studies) and offer stenting, polypectomy, dilation, variceal therapy and biliary drainage as needed. In addition, age appropriate diagnostics and transplant-linked care are provided with dietitians and psychological support built into long-term plans.

Piles (Haemorrhoids) and Anal Fissure
Piles (Haemorrhoids):** Vascular cushions in the anal canal that become symptomatic due to swelling, inflammation, or prolapse. Classified as internal (above dentate line) or external (below dentate line). Anal Fissure:** A small tear or ulcer in the lining of the anal canal, typically in the posterior midline.
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)
Peptic Ulcer Disease refers to a break in the mucosal lining of the stomach (gastric ulcer) or duodenum (duodenal ulcer), extending through the muscularis mucosa, often due to an imbalance between aggressive factors (acid, pepsin) and defensive mechanisms (mucous barrier, bicarbonate, blood flow).
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder characterised by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits (diarrhoea, constipation, or both) in the absence of detectable structural or biochemical abnormalities.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a group of chronic, immune-mediated disorders characterised by relapsing and remitting inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two primary subtypes are Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).
Viral Hepatitis (A, B, C)
An acute, self-limiting infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis A virus. It does not lead to chronic disease. A potentially life-threatening liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus. It can cause both acute and chronic disease. A liver infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus, often asymptomatic initially, but frequently leading to chronic infection.
Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
GERD is a chronic condition characterized by the retrograde flow of gastric contents into the esophagus, leading to troublesome symptoms and/or complications due to repeated mucosal exposure to acid and pepsin.
Gastritis
Gastritis refers to inflammation, irritation, or erosion of the gastric mucosa, which can be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (persistent or recurrent). It may involve the entire stomach or specific regions.
Gallstones
Gallstones are solid deposits forming inside the gallbladder from bile components. Cholecystitis refers to inflammation of the gallbladder, most commonly caused by gallstones blocking the cystic duct. This blockage leads to bile buildup, pain, and infection. The condition may appear as intermittent biliary colic or sudden acute inflammation. Gallbladder disease can range from mild discomfort to severe, potentially dangerous complications if untreated, requiring timely diagnosis and appropriate medical or surgical management. Early recognition helps prevent serious outcomes and improves recovery.
Fatty Liver (Hepatic Steatosis)
Fatty liver is a condition characterised by the accumulation of excess fat (triglycerides) in hepatocytes, exceeding 5–10% of liver weight. It encompasses a spectrum from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis.

Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive procedure that uses a small, pill-sized camera to examine the small intestine, which is difficult to reach with traditional endoscopy which is gastroscopy and colonoscopy. It is primarily used to investigate obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, evaluate suspected Crohn's disease, and detect tumors or other abnormalities in the small bowel.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that allows gastroenterologists to examine the entire colon and rectum for abnormalities such as polyps, inflammation, bleeding, and cancer. It is considered the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening and is recommended for adults starting at age 45-50, or earlier for those with increased risk factors. During the procedure, the physician can also remove precancerous polyps, significantly reducing the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
ERCP is a specialised endoscopic procedure that combines upper endoscopy and X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. It is primarily used to remove gallstones from the bile duct, treat strictures (narrowing) in the ducts, place stents to relieve blockages, and obtain biopsies of suspected tumours. ERCP is particularly valuable for conditions like choledocholithiasis (bile duct stones), pancreatitis, and biliary strictures.
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
Endoscopic ultrasound combines endoscopy and ultrasound technology to obtain detailed images of the digestive tract and surrounding organs. It is used for diagnosing and staging gastrointestinal cancers, evaluating pancreatic disorders, assessing bile duct abnormalities, and examining submucosal lesions. EUS provides higher resolution images than traditional abdominal ultrasound and can guide fine-needle aspiration biopsies of suspicious masses that are not accessible by other methods.
Hemorrhoid Banding
Haemorrhoid banding, also known as rubber band ligation, is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure used to treat internal haemorrhoids. It involves placing small rubber bands around the base of haemorrhoids to cut off their blood supply, causing them to shrink and fall off within a few days. This procedure is most effective for grade I-III internal haemorrhoids and is considered the first-line treatment for symptomatic internal haemorrhoids that don't respond to conservative management.
Liver Biopsy
Liver biopsy is a diagnostic procedure that involves removing a small sample of liver tissue for examination under a microscope. It is used to diagnose liver diseases, determine the severity of liver damage (such as fibrosis or cirrhosis), monitor disease progression, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. It remains the gold standard for assessing liver histology, though non-invasive alternatives like FibroScan are increasingly used.
Upper Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy – EGD)
Upper endoscopy, also known as Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure that allows direct visualisation of the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first part of the small intestine). It is used to diagnose and treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, Barrett's oesophagus, inflammation, strictures, and early-stage cancers. EGD is considered the most accurate test for evaluating the upper GI tract.
